Supervision of staff is often reported by camp, conference, and retreat professionals as the part of the job creating the most stress. You know that in the camp and retreat world, human resources can be more of a balancing act than in other settings. Whether a career or a ministry, the settings of camps and retreat centers are people-focused, multi-faceted, emphasize fun and the beauty of the outdoors. Staff are often required to do any number of jobs. For year-round programs, many staff live, eat and work together – often with each other’s family members – resulting in multi-layered relationships, informality, and blurred boundaries. Unit supervisors may have expertise in their areas of responsibility – like food service, facilities management or office administration – but do not have training in personnel management. Today’s challenging times means many sites are struggling just to get enough staff for full operation leading supervisors to feel reluctant to hold staff members accountable.
Participants of all four sessions will receive a Certification of Completion for Managing Camp Staff from Healthy Camp Leadership.
